How to start with SEO?

Updated: Sep 3

SEO - search engine optimization, which intensifies the quality and quantity of traffic through organic search engine results. You can attract all of the visitors without purpose, and when someone clicks into your website because they are looking for an Apple watch following Google recommendations, while you are a farmer selling apples, that is a ridiculous case for unqualified traffic. And for sure, businesses want to attract likely consumers who are genuinely interested in the products or services they provide. Once your content achieves the top ranking, you will get significant traffic, and technically, more traffic is better. The company wants to consider SEO besides GoogleAdwords because organic traffic is no need to pay. And SEO make up a substantial portion of many search engine result pages (SERPs).

Here are SEO terms that will help understand the way search engines work:

  • Crawling: the process by which search engines discover your web pages.

  • Googlebot: is the crawler that goes out and finds content.

  • Index: Google or other search engines store all contents it can discover into a separate index. Each entry of the index has attributed a page that describes the content and location (URL). Indexing is the process of organizing and storing content that Google found during crawling.

  • Caffeine: Automatic software collects and indexing all web content, you can explain as Google's web indexing system.

How do search engines work:

When someone searches, the search engine will scour its index to find the most relevant content and then order it to solve the searcher's query. This ordering of search results by relevance is the same as ranking, and you can assume that the higher a content is ranked organically, the more suitable search engines discover that site is to the query. It is possible to block search engine crawlers from your content or avoid Caffeine indexing your content. But if you don't have reason to do that, you have to make sure your content is accessible for crawlers and indexable. It's the first practice of SEO; otherwise, it's as good as invisible.

How to start with SEO:

1. What do you want to rank for:

The first step of an SEO plan is keyword research. So how to know which strategy keywords to target in your website's contents and maneuver it to satisfy both searchers and search engines. Keyword research does take time, and some people want to skip it since they know what they'd like to rank. But, the keywords you want to rank for and what your target audiences genuinely want are often wildly different things, and thus if you want to achieve realistic results, you should stop guessing and start planning. Focusing on your likely consumer and then using well-prepared data will lead to more success than arbitrary keywords. These steps provide the specific data that help you answering some essential questions like:

  • What types of products/services are people searching for?

  • Who is searching for these terms?

  • When are people searching for it?

  • Why and How are they searching for it?

  • Where are your potential customers located?

And now, after defining the above questions, you do your job to provide the most helpful content to cultivate the potential community and fulfill what they are looking for. There are a lot of tools that help you do this stage easier. Some keywords research tools are free, and others are pretty expensive. Although these tools can become a right-hand man that helps your job productively, keep in mind that you can not outsource your keyword research to a tool. It would be best if you took the time to deeply understand your target audience about the search terms they are using.

2. Set realistic goal

A new site will be rather hard to rank high in the beginning. The larger volume of keywords or keyword phrases are, the more work is required to achieve. Usually, big brands take up the top 10 results for high-volume keywords, so if you start with a website and target those same keywords, the uphill battle for ranking will take you up to years of effort. For the beginning, you should use long-tail keywords, which are longer, more specific, and have less competition than the popular head keywords. Don't undervalue these less popular keywords. For example, a person searching for a "watch" is probably just browsing, while the one using "best price Samsung gear 2 smartwatch rose gold" is more likely to set aside money for this purpose.

3. External and Internal linking

Regarding external links, Google needs to know whether your website exists so it can get your contents into the index while crawling. If your website is new, you need at least one external link towards your site and make sure the external website that you extracted the link from is available on Google.

Let's move on to the internal link. You own a new site and don't have much content yet, so it's a perfect time to build a flawless internal linking structure. You can decide which pages are the most important and the pages you want to rank with. Then these pages should have internal links towards them from others.

4. Start writing

Apparently, no content means no rank. People often refer to SEO with the idea of simply adding the search term as much as possible in the crucial places of your content, such as meta description. But it's not enough an amazing SEO content is balancing between the density of keywords and the usefulness of content to attract likely consumers, implementing your customer-centric mindset, and optimizing the content to interact with target audiences from the first post. While writing, make sure you use some in the researched keywords list that you want to be found and rank. After finishing the text, you can optimize your SEO title and meta description too.

If you intend to post content on your site, you may want to take time to make sure Google notices your effort. Successful SEO is not trying to catch up with Google. It's not about tricking Google when they change the ranking algorithms. SEO should partner with Google to provide the best search results for Google's users.
