How to Effectively Manage a Remote Team?

1. Make sure that you check with your team regularly.

Checking with your team regularly is a must. Now that your team is working in different places, possibly further parts of the world, checking in with them is essential. Checking could vary from checking how they are. This is also very important because you want to know the status of your team. This will give you an idea if they are on top of their work, slaking, or need help/support if they need a break.

Now that they are working from the comfort of their home, isolation or burnout could be a major problem. You want to make sure that you are cleaning with your team and seeing how they are doing—another form of checking their progress. You want to be aware of the project/task they are working on to make sure they are on the right track. Checking in with your team will give you a better overview of how you can assist them.

2. Establish rules and responsibilities from the start

Establishing rules and responsibilities is fundamental, and you want to do this in the beginning. Setting a tone with your team can get you a long way. If you leave an impression that your team will be productive, the aura will be reflected throughout the year (hopefully longer).

You want to set the rules and responsibilities with your team to be aware of what is expected from them. You want to make sure that they understand these expectations so their work can be grounded with those expectations. Setting basic rules like being productive, and having good time management and following the deadlines could impact the quality of their work throughout the year.

3. Be more understanding

This is a must-do if you are managing a remote team. Now that there’s more room for negative thoughts, distractions, and burnout, we have to understand your team more. Working from home is never easy, there could be many distractions that would have never affected your team if you worked in the appropriate workplace. So if they are late with some task or they need more extension with their projects or if they need a break or any request (as long as it is realistic and reasonable), you need to be understanding to alleviate the pressure and the very difficult situation that they are already facing working remotely.
