The Arts of Mastering Work-Life Balance

Updated: Nov 26, 2020

Sometimes we have to learn the hard way that work and your life outside of it just do not balance themselves out. Creating a healthy work-life balance has never been a breeze in an era where multi-tasking requires nothing more than a touch of the finger on our smart devices. Work has never been this accessible and yet inseparable.

This has led us to feel the constant urge to juggle various tasks and responsibilities at the same time.

Poor work-life balance is the source of numerous stress-induced illnesses ranging from physical issues (heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and stroke) to mental health problems (depression, anxiety, personality disorder).

There is no such thing as a one size fit all approach to creating a stable and effective work-life balance, however, there are certain tips on how to find the balance that works for you.

  1. Prioritizing

In order to avoid working overtime, you have to establish the routine of listing out all of your tasks with the aim to prioritize important one while cutting out tasks with little to no value.

Log these essential tasks to hours that you are most productive, this method could help you get more work done while also have more time to relax after work.

2. Get rid of perfectionism

Perfectionism could be of great help when it comes to generating momentum and motivation, however, a perfectionist could easily gravitate towards obsession in the long run.

This obsession over achievement and outcome can weigh you down as well as causing chronic stress. Learn to accept the fact that things do not always go as you expect and sometimes problems emerge. Try to make the most out of the experience and move on is proven to be the better option.

3. Set boundaries between work and personal life

As the old adage goes, do not mix work with pleasure. As soon as you leave the office, make sure that all your work email notifications are switched off. If something urgent occurs, they can reach you through a phone call.

Learn to shun work-related activities as soon as you get home, this will help you avoid burnout and anxiety.
