Tips for New Managers - 5 crucial tips on Leadership for First Time Managers

Congratulations. You have just been appointed manager , first time manager. Here are 5 easy tips to guarantee a successful journey as a good boss.

1. You are working for the team, build a mindset of CARE:

Studies confirm what common sense tells us: people who feel cared for at work are more engaged and effective. They’re happier, more positive and productive, and less likely to leave. Caring for the people who report to you doesn’t just make you a better boss—it has a positive effect on your entire organization, including the bottom line.

2. Understand the expectation of your Team

Setting expectations for your employees is an essential responsibility that many business owners gloss over. Clear employee expectations benefit not only your staff, but your business as a whole. Belinda Wee, an associate professor at Husson University's School of Business and Management, said managers must communicate, in both speaking and writing, the level of performance they require from each employee in order to receive their desired results.

3. Understand the expectation of your supervisor:

Now you have a different role than before. You are leading a team, so you need to know more closely to understand your own supervisor's expectations so you can make that happen by your team. It is also very important for you to explain all those expectations in a very practical and comfortable manner to your team, so they can also give their hands to work with you to meet those expectations.

4. Make yourself more available to your team:

Talk to your team every day, even if it’s just a ‘Good morning, how are you today?’ Always be in touch, be accessible and approachable. Be one of the team, don’t set yourself above them, or ask them to do things you wouldn’t.

Make time for them, make it clear that you care about their ideas and experiences at work, that you value their work and their input.

Be vulnerable, don't act like you are always right

5. Start making decision with even limited data:

Now you are a manager, so the team will be looking at you to make decision making calls. This is the real space where you need to learn daily by practicing your decision making habit with limited data. Your guts is one of your friends on this too.
