The influence of this middle management concern on organizations is wide-reaching. Middle managers are critical in translating a company's approach into tactical validity and enabling their teams to be effective.

However, as Forbes's studies find out, "many managers are never given the tools or training to manage. They typically rise through the ranks of a technical track and then, all of a sudden, is given a team to manage and are expected to do so effectively." Also, Forbes points out that these new in-house managers "struggle with the soft skills: giving feedback, setting the expectation, developing their team, and managing conflict." A study of almost 200,000 U.S. employees suggests that 32% are "involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work and workplace." The noticeable result is that an unexpected 68% of employees presumably perform their tasks with little effort or care.

For many workers, their working experience is mainly related to their team and management styles. They estimate that 51% of employees are actively looking for a better job and career placement. Given that replacing an employee is somewhere between 2 and 6 times the former annual salary (and considering that the cost of appropriately replacing a top performer is likely much higher), this suggests a significant problem.
